Heavy injury blow for Szeged: Kukic out for the season

The challenges are mounting for OTP Bank-Pick Szeged as the season reaches its climax. According to Hungarian media reports, Serbian playmaker Lazar Kukic requires surgery and will miss the remainder of the season.

The incident occurred during last Saturday’s Hungarian Cup semifinal against rivals Veszprém. Late in the first half, Lazar Kukic suffered a severe shoulder injury. Information released during a Hungarian Handball Federation (MKSZ) press event on Tuesday confirms that Kukic dislocated his shoulder—an injury so serious that surgery is necessary.

The verdict is a tough one for the 30-year-old: at least three months of recovery, effectively ending his season and ruling him out of the upcoming World Championship qualifiers between Serbia and Hungary in May.

Smárason left isolated at center back

Kukic’s injury creates a massive void in Szeged’s offensive rotation, particularly given the current roster depth. Following the mid-season departure of Swedish superstar Jim Gottfridsson, the burden of organizing the play now falls almost entirely on Icelandic international Janus Dadi Smárason.

As the only remaining specialist center back, Smárason faces an immense workload heading into the Champions League quarterfinals. Facing the reigning champions, SC Magdeburg, with only one natural playmaker available is a tactical nightmare for the Szeged coaching staff.
