Faroese international joins HF Karlskrona ahead of new season

HF Karlskrona continue to strengthen their ties to the Faroe Islands, confirming the signing of Faroese international Leivur Mortensen ahead of the upcoming season.

The 26-year-old left wing arrives from Danish side FIF Copenhagen, where he has been playing in the second tier. Mortensen is also a regular part of the Faroe Islands national team, which in recent years has gained increasing attention on the international handball stage.

Karlskrona see the signing as a strategic addition that fits both their playing philosophy and long-term ambitions.

– Leivur is a player we have followed for a long time. He has qualities that fit well with the way we want to play, the club said in a statement.

Mortensen himself highlights the club environment and culture as key factors behind his decision.

– I know that HF Karlskrona is a club with clear ambitions and a strong team culture, which really suits my way of thinking. I’ve heard many good things about the environment around the club and the support from the fans. I see it as a fantastic place to take the next step in my career, improve my game and contribute to something that is growing in the right direction, he said.

The move also comes as current left wing Noah Martinsson is set to leave the club after the season, opening up space for Mortensen to take on an important role.

In addition to the sporting aspects, the Faroese international believes the transition off the court will be smooth.

– The city seems like a fantastic place, especially since it’s close to the sea, which reminds me a bit of home. I like that kind of environment and the strong sense of community that comes with it, he said, adding:

– It feels like a place where I can both develop as a player and enjoy life off the court. I’m looking forward to playing in Brinova Arena, which I understand is located right by the water.
