Tunisia avoids Egypt after dominant performance

The AFCON main round finished yesterday. Tunisia advanced to the semifinals after claiming top spot with an impressive 37–25 win over Cape Verde. The result means they avoid favorites Egypt in the semifinals.

As expected, Egypt have been dominant in AFCON, winning every match so far, with the closest being an eleven-goal victory against Gabon in the opening game.

They go into the semifinals as huge favorites to lift the trophy. The other team to advance from their main round group was Algeria, who, despite a shock loss to Nigeria in the group stage, managed to scrape through on goal difference.

In Group Two, it was a three-way battle between Cape Verde, Morocco, and Tunisia for a semifinal spot.

Cape Verde and Tunisia faced off in the final group match. Tunisia, who dropped a point against Morocco previously, needed a win to secure a place in the next round.

For Cape Verde, it was all about defending the top spot in the group and avoiding Egypt in the semifinals. Despite expectations of a close game, Tunisia completely dominated.

After racing to an early first-half lead, the Tunisians never looked back. Bilel Abdelli was on fire, scoring ten goals as he led his team to a crushing 37–25 victory.

Tunisia finish top of the group and will face Algeria in the semifinals — a much better matchup than Egypt, who now await Cape Verde.
