Sweden had gone through the entire tournament with a perfect record, but their meeting with Iceland brought the winning streak to an end as they fell 27–35.
Despite two offensively strong teams, the opening stages of the match were relatively low-scoring. Much of the reason was outstanding saves from both Mikael Appelgren and Iceland’s Viktor Gísli Hallgrímsson.
Iceland took control early, and Sweden found themselves chasing the game. As expected, the Icelanders displayed explosive and tricky attacking play, with changes of pace and efficiency that tested the Swedish defence. Viggó Kristjánsson was reliable from the penalty line, allowing Iceland to extend their lead further before halftime.
Sweden came out to the second half determined to respond. Their attack showed clear depth, with several players stepping up to contribute. Andreas Palicka also displayed energy and sharpness in goal, while Viggó Kristjánsson continued to be clinical, helping Iceland maintain their grip on the match.
Sweden tried to reduce the gap, but they were unable to get closer, and Iceland pulled further ahead to secure the win.
Iceland–Sweden 35–27 (18–12)
