Denmakr back!, Fis, Kirkeløkke. Here are three key takeaways after Denmark defeated Spain 36-31.
Denmark Back!
Nikolaj Jacobsen side once again showed that the loss against Portugal was a one-off mistake. The victory against France was followed by another dominant performance, as Spain were comfortably beaten. The second-half display truly highlighted how strong the reigning world champions are. All the stars delivered, and Denmark got offensive production from every position.
Now Norway and Germany await, where four points will likely be needed to reach the semifinals. The feeling is that Denmark will get the job done when all is said and done.
Fis
Spain are out, and it is hard to describe their tournament as anything but disappointing. Much of the squad appears to be past its peak, and Spain are clearly in need of a new generation to compete with the very best again.
However, there is a major positive: 18-year-old Fis. He scored nine goals in today’s game and showcased an incredible offensive arsenal. It is fair to say Spain have a generational talent on their hands, and the young right back will surely be back on the big stage soon.
Kirkeløkke
Originally a right back, Kirkeløkke has become a key piece of the Danish side. He covers for Mathias Gidsel in defense while also providing an efficient option on the right wing. Six goals from six attempts today, combined with a very strong defensive performance, underline his value.
He may not grab the biggest headlines in a team full of stars, but Kirkeløkke plays an underrated role in Denmark’s winning machine.
