Crazy game, defense?, and The continuation. Here are three takes after Slovenia defeated Montenegro 41–40.
Crazy game
Both teams went all out in attack from start to finish. It was a crazy game where the lead switched back and forth, and neither side had any defensive answers. For Slovenia, Makuc, Novak, and Janc put on a show, with all three players scoring eight or more goals. Montenegro had their response in Branko and Miloš Vujović, who scored 11 and 9 goals respectively. The game was completely open throughout, but in the final minutes Slovenia were the cooler side and managed to edge out a one-goal victory.
Defense?
Over 80 goals were scored in the game, and it was a nightmare for both goalkeepers. Both sides got almost everything they wanted offensively, scoring at will. It was dramatic and fascinating to watch — but where was the defense? Conceding 40 goals will not be enough if either side wants to advance in the tournament. Both teams will have to find a better way to protect their goal in the coming matches.
The continuation
Despite showing clear defensive flaws, Slovenia secured two massive points in a group that feels wide open. The Faroe Islands and Switzerland drew their match, which puts Slovenia in the driver’s seat. One more win will secure a place in the main round — and Slovenia should have every chance to achieve it.
