Reports: Kolstad to cut player wages

According to TV 2 Norwegian club Kolstad are in a difficult financial situation. Apparently the club have informed the players that wage cuts will be necessary going forward.

Kolstad has had an upswing on the field in the last week. After having struggled big time in the champions league during the fall, Kolstad managed to pull off an impressive upset defeating last year’s finalist Fuchse Berlin 28-24 at home.

But the positive headlines didn’t last long. According to TV 2 the club held intense meetings during the weekend where it was decided that salary cuts are necessary because of a struggle financially.

The report says that the players have been informed of the situation and that it will be the highest earners who will see the biggest impact. Some players that will be affected are Sigvaldi Gudjonsson, Gøran Johannessen, Magnus Gullerud, Simen Lyse, and Andreas Palicka.

Kolsad doesn’t want to comment on any specific salary reduction but confirms they are looking at a new strategy financially.

– We are working on a new sporting strategy for what Kolstad will look like in the future. This means that we must be competitive, but that it must also be financially sustainable, says Kolstad’s general manager, Jostein Sivertsen, to TV 2.
