There were a lot of nerves to handle in Basel, Switzerland got their second Euro campaign going while Faroe Islands heard the starting signal for their first ever championship game.
A lot of technical faults was a worrying trend already from the beginning, when Faroe Islands also missed penalties Switzerland found the pace to open a gap.
Lea Schüpbach stopped the chances for nearly ten minutes when 2–2 became 7–2. Tabea Schmid provided precise shots and Switzerland held on to 13–7 at half-time.
Faroe Islands had the support of 400 to 500 fans in St. Jakobshalle and the keeper Annika Frídheim Petersen hindered a impending catastrophe with competent saves.
With 15 minutes to go Faroe Islands faced an eight goal deficit but the sprint towards the end brought some onward hope in the already lost game.
Pernille Brandenborg and Jana Mittun found room for seven goals each. Faroe Islands won the second half by three goals and finished thoroughly decent.
