The Montenegrin powerhouse ŽRK Budućnost is on the brink of shutting down. The club’s main sponsor has withdrawn.
– The club is simply shutting down, said club director Maja Bulatović to Dan.
Ahead of the 2024/25 season, ŽRK Budućnost made a significant investment by acquiring six new players, including Swedish national team star Jenny Carlson and Aïssatou Kouyaté. Now, the club cannot afford these players and may be forced to shut down.
The reason is that their main sponsor has withdrawn from the partnership, reports the Danish news site Europamester.
To the Montenegrin newspaper Dan, Budućnost’s club director Maja Bulatović says they cannot afford to participate in the Champions League or make new signings.
– The players who were supposed to come should be informed that they are not part of the club, that they are free. It’s simple, the club is shutting down, Bulatović told Dan.
ŽRK Budućnost won the Champions League in both 2012 and 2015 and is the biggest club in Montenegro.
– Today, we do not have the necessary resources to participate in the Champions League. The club is simply shutting down, said Maja Bulatović to Dan.
