Germany closing in on quarterfinal spot

With three wins in four matches Italy has proved their championship value after nearly 30 years of World Cup absence. The underdog experienced a well-earned chance in a battle for a quarterfinal spot, but Germany reigned until 34–27.

Germany appeared with Julian Köster and Timo Kastenng in strong shape and overcame some start hiccups to regain composure.

More and more cracks started to show in Italy’s defense and technical faults towards the end of the first half allowed Germany to push back.

Italy had 7–4 but allowed three fast goals as Germany equalized. At half-time Germany was up buy two goals with a clear ambition to increase the lead.

Italy alternated with a more aggressive defense in the second half and Domenico Ebner caught some shots. Too many mistakes and failed attempts from the penalty line made the last hope fade out, Italy fought bravely but the higher capacity led Germany to victory. A blazing performance from Franz Semper brought a right back threat in play for the leading team and Italy trailed further and further behind.

While the top scorer Leo Prantner finished off with finesse and found the net several times, Germany couldn´t be beat in the long run.

For Germany the triumph opens the path to a quarterfinal spot, even before the last match Main round is played.

Denmark is up against Switzerland in the last Thursday evening duel. A danish triumph will end the top two discussion in group I and potentially make the olympic finalists ready for quarterfinal action in World Cup 2025.
