Neither Denmark or Portugal had lost a match leading up to tonight’s game. However, Denmark pulled ahead significantly in the second half, meaning that Croatia will face Denmark in the World Championship final.
The game began at a furious pace. Just three minutes in, Portugal had already received three suspensions — a nightmare start against a strong Danish side. The Portuguese were forced to battle on with three fewer players on the court.
Denmark quickly pulled ahead to 6–2, but Portugal refused to give up and steadily closed the gap. However, it didn’t take long for Denmark to regain a four-goal lead.
Despite Emil Nielsen’s impressive saves on two of Portugal’s penalty shots, the Portuguese stayed resilient. With ten minutes remaining, Denmark held a narrow 13–12 lead. But it wasn’t long before Denmark stepped up their game and extended the advantage to 20–16 by halftime.
Portugal had a tough start in the second half as well. Denmark extended their lead, thanks in large part to a solid performance from Rasmus Lauge. After ten minutes, the scoreboard read 28–20.
Denmark had everything working in their favor and pulled away decisively. Emil Nielsen shut down Portugal’s attacks, while Lauge, Gidsel, and Pytlick continued to take charge offensively.
Portugal had little to offer in response and had to accept defeat. The victory secures Denmark’s place in the World Championship final against Croatia. Portugal will instead face France in the bronze medal match.
Denmark–Portugal 40–27 (20–16)
