Andy Schmid in early start with Switzerland

Ex-national player Andy Schmid switches fast between jobs in his handball career. Effective immediately the back court legend resumes duty as head of the Swiss men’s team.

Schmid was designated to take over the coaching position during the summer. But after performing superb on court in his final showdown, Euro 2024, Schmid’s ready to act as another form of leader.

– The last two months have once again impressively shown me the unpredictability and dynamism of top-class sport. The association’s situation and my personal situation have both changed, which is why this premature assumption of office makes sense for both parties. I’m already looking forward to being able to get started as national coach in March, says Schmid to the Swiss federation website.

Schmid will succeed Michael Suter. The match schedule includes a friendly game away against Denmark to conclude a training camp in Bern.

In May, Slovenia tries to stand in the way of Switzerland in the World Cup play-off. Switzerland enters the final qualification as an outsider, aiming to reach their second WC in four years.

– First of all, I would like to thank Andy for taking office early. It is not a given that he would step in from March. As the national coach, who was communicated a year ago, Andy always has an eye on the big picture and the cooperation within the SHV and is therefore the ideal solution, says federation president Pascal Jenny to SHV´s website.

Thomas Zimmerman, assistant coach and Miloš Cuckovic, goalkeeper coach will also be on the bench in Schmid´s coaching debut.
