Niklas Landin has had to return home from the national team gathering due to issues with his right eye. Flensburg goalkeeper Kevin Møller steps in and joined the national team squad on Tuesday, gathered for this weekend’s matches against Norway and Croatia.
Niklas Landin has been found to have a bleeding on the retina of his right eye, prompting national coach Nikolaj Jacobsen to take no risks and send him home to allow the eye to rest.
– We could have kept Niklas in the camp and hoped he would be cleared to play this weekend, but considering Aalborg’s schedule ahead, and our desire to utilize Niklas ourselves later in the summer, it’s wisest to let him rest so the eye can heal, and hopefully, he’ll be ready again soon, says Nikolaj Jacobsen to the Danish Handball Association’s website.
The injury occurred even before Niklas Landin joined this week’s national team gathering. During Sunday’s league match for Aalborg Handball, he was hit by a ball in the head, and the eye continued to bother the goalkeeper during warm-ups for Monday’s training. Hence, it was further examined at the hospital.
– I’m naturally disappointed to have to leave the national team camp. But it’s the right decision, so that I can be ready to play again as soon as possible with the prospect of an exciting end to the season, says Niklas Landin.
Kevin Møller was last with the Danish national team during the gathering and the international match against Switzerland in March and has now joined the squad for this weekend’s matches against Norway and Croatia.
